Ceramics

The very largest section of the collection (too large to be photographed yet) – Works in ceramics. The collection started with modern American pottery: Russel Wright, Universal Pottery, Cowan Pottery – and quickly moved into the realm of Mata Ortiz, Santo Domingo, and pre-columbian mostly Southwest Pottery.

Modern forms were the draw, but soon the geometric pattern and ornamentation of “native” pottery took over. Just like the African and Ethnographic collections, the idea of humans throughout time decorating objects with geometry opens the collection as a whole to the conversation on what modern is now and what are its origins.
